Our Projects & Services

Picture
We started with a Shopping and Prescription delivery service.
As we recognised the need for additional services, we were quick to respond and have added these as we have progressed.
We are flexible and will deal with any issue that comes through our Helpline. Where we cannot help, we will refer people to an appropriate, relevant service.

HOSPITAL TRANSPORT
Biggar Community Action Group (BCAG) liaises with Getting Better Together, Shotts (GBT),
who provide hospital transport for the whole of Lanarkshire.
We have a referral process for eligible residents of Biggar.
Where GBT cannot fulfil requests, we have our own team
of volunteers who we can call on to help.

Listening Ear
Hot Meals
BCAG offers a “Listening Ear” telephone service for lonely, isolated or vulnerable residents in the area.
The service offers support through a network of volunteers who telephone socially isolated individuals. Volunteers telephone regularly on days and times which are both needed and wanted. This allows recipients of the service to feel connected to
others and thus enjoy a positive chance to chat.
We have a core team of volunteers who have extensive experience in communication skills. Each volunteer has undergone a Disclosure Scotland check and is committed to providing a service that provides confidentiality and respects
privacy.
If you identify someone who could benefit from this service, or you would like to find out more, contact the Listening Ear Helpline on 07422 356635.
During the pandemic,  it became evident that some people who were shielding or self-isolating, were missing out on a hot meal every day, so we started our Hot Meals service.
Robert Allen and the staff from the Elphinstone hotel have been preparing nourishing meals, twice a week, for elderly and vulnerable people and these are being delivered by a dedicated team of volunteers. The meals have been very well received and the volunteers have enjoyed chatting to the recipients about their lockdown experience. This service will continue as long as there is a need in the community and we are able to procure funding.

Christmas Lunches
We are aware that  Some members of our community are alone and unable to see their families and friends for Christmas lunch.
Thanks to grant funding from Clyde Windfarm Extension Fund and other funders,  and in  cooperation with The Elphinstone Hotel, we provide a Christmas lunch for some of the most vulnerable members of our community. Lunch is served in the Gillespie Centre. Where recipients chose not to leave home, we deliver to their doors. We hope that we bring some Christmas cheer where it was most needed.

Trishaw Project
Snow Clearance and Gritting
When Winter sets in, BCAG volunteers will once again be clearing snow from pavements and gritting in order for people to walk safely in periods of snowy and icy weather. We will be concentrating on areas of the town where elderly and vulnerable people live.
We ask everyone to look out for their neighbours, but if you are aware of a pavement which is unsafe and requires gritting then please call our Helpline.

Social History Project
We are  working on putting together a social history of Biggar during lockdown

During covid, we conducted a series of interviews with people of all ages, of different life styles and occupations, in all parts of the town.  These interviews were carried out either by telephone, online or, where possible, face–to-face.
Local photographer, Helen Barrington, took photos of our interviewees and also photos of lockdown life in and around Biggar. We plan to hold some form of exhibition, when a suitable date and venue can be identified.
